Lee A. Popkin
Lee A. Popkin has an estate planning and business transactional practice with an emphasis in the areas of federal and state tax planning. Mr. Popkin has experience in estate planning, probate administration, joint venture planning, and business entity formation. He is an associate with the firm.
Mr. Popkin was born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee. He graduated from Webb School of Knoxville in 2001. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in accountancy from Miami University in 2005, graduating cum laude. Mr. Popkin obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Memphis in 2008, graduating magna cum laude. While a law student, Mr. Popkin was a Cecil C. Humphries Fellowship scholar, research assistant to Professor Earnest Lidge, and received awards in Criminal Procedure, Fair Employment, and Labor-Relations.
Mr. Popkin obtained his Master of Laws in Taxation (LL.M.) degree from New York University in 2009. While at New York University, he developed and has maintained relationships with several of the leading tax professionals in the country. Mr. Popkin has served as a guest speaker at the University of Tennessee School of Law on the taxation of business entities. He has also served as an instructor at a continuing legal education event on the taxation of real estate transactions. He is a member of the Knoxville and Tennessee Bar Associations. He has been with the firm since 2009.
Among Lee’s recent representative matters, he has:
- Represented developers in structuring real estate joint ventures;
- Represented individuals in business succession and estate planning matters;
- Represented personal representatives in probate administration;
- Assisted non-profit organizations obtain tax exempt status;
- Assisted business entities obtain exemption from Tennessee franchise and excise tax; and
- Advised entrepreneurs on business entity selection.
