David Wilson Long

Louis Crossley, Jr.David Long is one of the three founding members of Long, Ragsdale & Waters, and is the President, a director and a shareholder of the firm. He concentrates his practice in the areas of commercial transactions, real estate development, loan transactions, business entity matters and general business law. Mr. Long is also active in the emerging area of conservation easements, representing several land trusts as well as land owners.logo-peer


Mr. Long represents companies in their general business needs, including drafting and reviewing contracts and organizational and related company documents. He is active in the areas of company finance, traditional loans, bond financing and private equity investments/financing. Mr. Long’s clients in the commercial real estate arena include banks and developers of shopping centers, residential developments, resorts, office buildings, and apartments. He frequently represents homeowner associations and parties involved in real estate disputes. A significant portion of Mr. Long’s practice includes projects utilizing conservation easements, and those efforts include representation of various land trusts as well as land owners and their banks. Mr. Long has worked on projects and with companies throughout the Southeast, with an obvious emphasis on Tennessee companies and projects.

Mr. Long attended Wake Forest University and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in 1978 (College of Business with emphasis on banking and finance), graduating magna cum laude. He obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Tennessee in 1981, where he was Order of the Coif. He was admitted to the Tennessee Bar in 1981. While an undergraduate, Mr. Long was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Omicron Delta Kappa. Also at UT he was a Sigma Chi, a member of the Mortar Board and a Torchbearer. While in law school, Mr. Long was a member of Phi Alpha Delta (Vice Justice 1979-1980) and was awarded the American Jurisprudence Award for Bankruptcy and Creditors Rights. Mr. Long was the Chairman of the Real Estate Section of the Tennessee Bar Association from 1992 to 1993, and serves on the "Mortgages and Other Debt Financing Committee" of the American Bar Association Real Property and Probate Section. He is a member of the Southeast Conservation Legal Defense Committee of the Land Trust Alliance. Mr. Long has been selected to be listed in Woodward/White‘s The Best Lawyers of America for over 10 years. He has also been selected for inclusion in the Mid-South Super Lawyers and the Knoxville Cityview Magazine’s Best Lawyers List. Mr. Long is an “AV” rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell.

Mr. Long is currently a board member of Foothills Land Conservancy, Legacy Parks Foundation and the Knox County/Knoxville Parks Advisory Committee. He is a graduate of Leadership Knoxville and currently serves as chairman of The Cross Ministry at the University of Tennessee. His childhood passion of outdoor activities, sports, and recreational pursuits continues to the present, with hiking, boating and attending sporting events being activities that Mr. Long enjoys during his “idle” time.
